How do I get to the sled riding area @ Stackhouse?
If I can get away from the computer, I might get out and try to grab some pics. I'll also grab a few shots of Suicide Hill, where many a kid risked life and limb for a minute of thrills, and then had to spend 20 minutes slogging back up to the top in a foot+ of snow and below freezing temps. Life was a blast.

Pbal, go to the Ranger station at top on Luzerne Street (I know it is spelled incorrectly) Kids use the path down from there.. usually the Ranger or someone will pull them back up the hill. That's the fun part.. watching them form a "train" to get back up..

What about "The Ridge"?  Do they still sled-ride there?  Used to be great.....

The Johnstown Municipal Golf Course is good for "young" sleders.....

By the sounds of it,  just about any road with a slope.  Let's try Millcreek Road first.......

There used to be a hill that went from Old Westmont to Brownstown called second hill. They would close in the winter and it was great.

We used to have a few sled riding "parties" behind the old Minderbinders.

I can remember as kids we would stand close to a corner and when the car stopped, grab the bumper and let it pull us... that is until we got caught!

We used to take the lid (a big round) from the wringer washer and sled ride on that. We about killed ourselves, but we had fun! Stayed outside for hours and hours, frozen stiff and still didn't want to come in. Back to the subject on hand, we had a path down the hill (where Hunter's Ridge is now). We could only do that a few times because it was a long hike back to the firetower.

Used to sled ride down the old Skateland(now Martin-Baker) parking lot.  Also in behind there was 'The Pipeline' that ran from the top of the hill to almost Falls Run.  Nice ride down but heck of a long way back up.  Not sure if one can even get in there now with Martin-Baker and PennDOT in there now.

You had several choices for sledding in the Belmont Homes (Luxor Gardens my eye). Kegg Ave. was steep and fast, but there was always the risk of cars. The alley behind Kegg was slightly shallower, but slightly longer. And then there was Suicide Hill (Duff Boulevard).

The more enterprising among us would start at the top of Kegg or the alley and make the swing onto Suicide. It was difficult to keep up enough momentum from Kegg into Suicide, so most trips went down the alley. The safest and easiest Suicide run was to bank right up The Old Dirt Road at the bottom of the straight. It was a shorter walk back up and afforded more runs through the evening. (As mentioned in another thread, we didn't get many school closures back then, so most of our sledding took place in the evening.)

If you were determined to shoot the hill, after passing the Dirt Road, you had to negotiate a broad 90 degree turn or risk flying off into space. I remember at least 2 kids who disappeared over that bank and were never heard from again. Finally, approaching the bottom of Suicide, you had to pray you could stop or risk gliding into traffic coming up or down Hogback Road. (Right-click to enlarge)

Watch Out!! Somebdy's coming up Hogback!

I never sledded behind 'Binders, but I did get my first drunk back there on Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill. Course, it was still the Belmont Gardens back then.

I'm sure if I look through photos from way back I can find one of me when I kissed the ground on a bike coming down Hogback Road..  I can still hear my Aunt yelling to call 911 and my uncle so calmly saying ... she'll be alright, it was a bike accident.  I just remember it hurt and I was bleeding.. wise man, I did survive!
