It's common knowledge the bulk of the higher paying jobs around town have come directly from the murtha pork parade. The snowball effect of losing these jobs IMO will be the straw that takes Johnstown down.  If the gravy train jobs end up leaving all the will be left is health care.  The problem I see with that is if more people continue leaving our elderly population will just continue to increase.  Eventually there will not be much of a need for the health care jobs because the population will keep falling and even the health care jobs will go away.

What do you think will become of Johnstown?

Doesn't most of the defense industry in Johnstown rely on competitive DOD bidding?  Rather than relying on only Murtha's pork.

I've been told by a former CTC manager they (defense industry) for the most part should be able to survive without the king of pork. AKA, competitive bidding.

That said, can Johnstown rise above the pitiful depressed status anytime soon?

Forget rehashing this hash. I want to know what happens when Obama cuts NDIC from next year's budget?

It is my opinion that we will all be effected directly or indirectly in a negative way in the very near future. Even if these operations stay and succeed the outcome will not be known for sometime and it is going to cause the employees to not spend as they are now. This is knowledge gained from talking to people who are employed by these defense companies. Until some confidence is gained that they can stand on their own, there will be a noticeable slump in our economy. Just my opinion, let's wait and see.

Can you buy a one way ticket to Bremerton, WA at the Mark Critz Airport?

Why don't we try to respect one another.

Johnstown will survive. It will flourish if and only if its citizens take control and make it happen.

Repeat after me.  All is Well.

I really don't think all is well nor is all beyond hope.

Too many want to keep waiting for someone to solve the problems.

Whether or not the existing companies, and all the supporting businesses, can self-sustain if funds wre transferred to other companies is hard to predict.  I think that it really depends on who is placed in charge of the Defense Appropriations Committee. To me who ever is in charge of that committee, coupled with who ever has the most influence, directs the steering of funds and that has been Murtha in both cases for many years.  The next power base may have ineterests in their own area or be driven by support from different companies.  Sadly that's how our government works and since there are some classic congressional debates about why Murtha steers so much money to his own district, it would seem that there is some desire to steer it else where.

Norm Dicks said he wouldn't forget Johnstown and hey, Mark Pasquerilla still lives.

Our situation is no worse than the rest of the country.  In fact we can't fall much further.  I have said that less than 5% of our population was dependent on Murtha pork.

I was surprised Pasquerilla didn't buy the hockey team.

I agree with Robin in that Johnstown is no worse than the rest of the country. Johnstown has demonstrated multiple times it can remain stable...

Eventually the federal government is going to have to cut spending and an obvious target for drastic cuts is in the defense department.  Pat Buchanan had a column about this the other day.

I wonder what would have happened had Murtha announced on February 1 that he was not going to seek reelection this year.
