Got into a conversation the other day about Hitchhiking.  We exchanged some stories about our adventures hitchhiking.  We used to hitchhike all the time, and it was always against our parents wishes.  Hitchhike home from high school, sports practice, trying to get home from "keg" parties. I do not see too much hitchhiking going on these day, but it still exists.

Any good hitchhiking stories out there?

When i was at school at Penn State, I thumbed home from State College.  I lived in Briarwood and one weekend I had a party to attend back at UPJ.  I made up a sign and off i went, blew off classes and headed out just before lunch.   I got back to J-Town in 3 rides.....I remember walking a few miles, but it went rather smooth, i thought.  I made it to Johnstown before dinner......my parents were not real happy, at all.

Not me but from a friend. He thumbed home from Erie one Friday that night him and a couple guy;s drove around egging cars. On Sunday he was thumbing back and a car slowed down about four or five kids just started heaving apples at him. He fell down from pain and laughing so hard. Also had friend picked up by a fag on 56 coming home from the mall buddy popped in the head and got out at Haynes st. Used to thumb to school every day never any bad experiences, but that was 35 yrs ago.

a bunch of us were down in Ft Lauderdale years ago.  I had just got done with school.  We had a friend that lived there. There were about 10-12 of us and one night we all got split up down at the beach. WE were all bar hopping, etc.  I was thumbing back to my buddy's place and got picked up by some dude in a corvette.  Nice car.  I hop in and he takes off down the main drag and then he say's, "I gotta pi$$", and goes down this side street.  At this point, i'm half stoned, and freaking out.  He stops and I get out and start running....that may have been the last of my hitchhiking days.....

I get back to the apartment and start telling my one friend.  He was thumbing also and just got back, about my experience and he says, "That weirdo stopped to pick me up, but I hesitated and told him No thanks.   I think i'm lucky to still be around.

On my way home for my Dad's funeral, I stopped for gas. Paid for it and got back in my Van. In front of me was a straggly looking guy with a duffel bag and a guitar. He said buddy, I have been here for three days. You can give me a ride or run over me, I don't care.

I asked if he had a driver's license. He did. I said get in and drive and I went to the couch in the back of the van to sleep. Figured if he killed me I would at least die in my sleep.

I woke up when he stopped in W. VA. where his destination was.

It made the drive from Nebraska to PA a lot easier.

one of our tricks when hitchhiking with more than one buddy was to start at an area where 1 or 2 people would hide......we felt we had a better chance at getting a ride......sometimes it worked, sometimes we were kindly denied.  Then of course there were the a$$holes who would pull over, you would run toward the car, and then just before getting there, they would peel out.....pricks.

I'll bet you didn't give the ride a tip either, for their generosity!

See, that is the benefit of Hitchhiking. You recieve a free ride.  Normally the people extending a ride are happy to assist. They would not want any monetary compensation.  They are just happy to help someone, plus they now have someone to BS to.  And, as a student, they understood our financial situation.   It would be an insult to offer money.

Now, if they could use a little "homegrown"..........well........we never bogarted.......
