My father was there for this battle, and was one of the first boots in Nagasaki after the surrender.  I didin't know this was the anniversary and will make a point to call him.

I went and visited the War Museum and Peace Park in Nagasaki in the early 80's.  The pictures they had at the Museum were very eerie, they have a few pictures there that show a shadow of a guard on the side of a manufacturing plant that was created when the bomb exploded.  It still gives me the creeps.

Punish?

War is war...whether you agree with it or not.

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting your explanation of war.

GONAVY...I know you don't know me...but please offer your father a Thank You from me from the Buzz when you next speak with him..

We owe much gratitude to the Greatest Generation.  A sincere thank you to all the WWII vets.  BTW...was he in the Marines or Army?  Or perhaps with your moniker as such, Navy?

Yes we do.  I will pass that along.  He is a Marine. I have a great picture of him and his platoon on Okinawa. Imagine gone for 2 yrs without speaking to any of your loved ones?  An occasional letter or package, quite the Generation.

Thank him for me as well.  I spent 20+ years in the Navy and am a history buff, so many port visits sparked visualations of my predecessors, your dad is unknown to be but part of the memories.  Semper Fi to the guy.

would you I have rather wrote Murder?   I don't agree with these weapons, you wanna fight, then fight.  You want to punish or murder then drop an A bomb.  Does that clear it all up for you?

War is war, but the degrees we went to to ensure the destruction of a great number of civilians is not war,  they call those war crimes.  I don't disrepect any Vet.

But, this has been debated for decades. It ended the war. I'm sure you are aware, before Japan surrendered, our generals, Marshall etc had plans in place to invade Japan. I'm sure most people are aware too of the casualty estimates for the US forces. A pretty well known number estimated to be as high as 1 million in KIA and wounded. I pray we NEVER drop a nuclear device but those two bombs saved thousands of our boys lives.  Agree or disagree...right or wrong.   Done

I have to agree with DVE on this.  The atomic bombs that were used saved many American lives acording to our military leaders.  I have no reason to disbelieve them.

Another example is the bombing of German cities with incendiary bombs that started firestorms that killed thousands of civilians.  IMHO, when faced with an enemy who was the aggressor and who will not surrender, an armed force is left with no choice.    Playing by the "rules" cannot be expected of our military when the other side doesn't.

All you have to do is look at how we have fought war since world war two and that will tell you how it should be done. We were attacked, went to war, fought to win at any cost to the enemy and came home winners and hero's to the world. In my opinion we haven fought to win since.
