Michael Phelps.. should he be allowed to compete?

With the strong emphasis on steroids in sports, should Phelps be allowed to compete with his recent activity using illegal drugs? I personally, do not feel that he should be allowed to compete for a year to show accountability for his actions.

Good question...
Seems more emphasis has been put on the Olympics with taking medals off of athletes who have tested postitive for steroids.
But, if you look, baseball, football, basketball and probably hockey too, guys are getting caught, paying fines and sitting out some games. But, it still continues. These same players I believe will have a tougher time getting to the all inclusive Halls of Fame. Look, Big Papi was just announced to have tested positive to some form of roids. And, what about home run records being broken, particulaly Barry Bonds. Good question, but very controversial answers.

I do agree he should be held accountable for his actions, even though he did not test positive in an anti-doping test, there is positive, irrefutable evidence of which he doesn't deny that he did indeed smoke pot. Funny no one has asked him if he inhaled or not. (joke).
With that said, though, I do not hold what he did smoking pot at the higher degree I hold steroid use in athletes. The banned steroids used by athletes are essentially used to enhance their physical ability to give them an edge above those of their opponents who do not take steroids. It's not only illegal but it also constitutes cheating.
Pot, on the other hand, does not enhance one's performance and usually to the contrary it would probably make them perform worse which I think is one of the reasons why Phelp's used it during off time from swimming, that and of course so he wouldn't fail an anti-doping test.
This is just my opinion, but I also feel that perhaps nothing further was done on this with regard to holding him accountable for doing something illegal, because he gets preferential treatment. It wouldn't be the first time. When he was 19 he was arrested and pled guilty to drunk driving and didn't have to serve any time, got off with 18 months' probation and had to talk at high schools about drinking and still got to swim for the University of Michigan.
He said the drunk driving was an "isolated incident" and his smoking pot was an "immature mistake". I wonder what excuse he'll come up with next. Funny he didn't say the reasonings for both was his diagnoses of ADD.

I sense a dislike of our swimming fellow here. I like Mike, he has heart, something a lot of athletes now adays don't have. He isn't a quitter. What is it with athletes name Mike.
Mike Tyson, Mike Vick, Mike Phelps hmmmm seems to be a connection.

I don't dislike Michael Phelp's per se. He has accomplished a lot as a great swimmer, but I also believe he got away with a lot for being so good as well, which a lot of athletes have. He's not the first and probably won't be the last.
And, just to clarify something in my previous post, Phelp's never swam for the University of Michigan because he had accepted endorsements and such and was considered pro, but yet he enrolled in school there just so he could train with Coach Bowman who had accepted the coaching position there and trained with the team, but yet did not represent them. I actually thought for awhile he went to college to actually get an education, but that wasn't exactly the case.
And, one other thing, he did a PSA shortly before the 2008 Olympics about anti-doping and then is seen in a picture "bonging it"...priceless.
