Great opportunity for observing human nature.
If you're just there or deep in line do you rush right up, oblivious (or pretending to be) to the many others who have been waiting much longer?

If the new clerk says "I'll take the NEXT customer" does that make a difference?

I was in a supermarket yesterday only two lines were open a regular and a 12 or less express. The regular was busy, the express empty. The regular clerk looked back at me with disdain, saying " you know, line 6 IS  open"
That's express, I'm not even close to express"  " she's not doing anything, go over there"
" well, ok if you insist"
Just as I pull out, three true express customers walk up-- I of course defer to them head back to my original line which is now 2 deeper than when I left!

No doubt we spend half our life time waiting! That includes in lines, on hold, and in traffic.

Should have walked up and bitch slapped her.  Might have knocked some sense into her.

Very interesting sociologic topic...to me it scales down to the "me first" syndrome.  Most of us have to be the first in the store, first out of the store and have the first spot outside the door to park our car.  It effects all aspects of our lives, except sex (we all want to finish last).  There are many reasons/theories of why we have that desire but it is really a mystery to me..

I think all humans have a competitive nature, some just more intense than others.

I prefer to take my turn and have wanted to choke a few rude shoppers.

My favorite though is when I am in line with three or four items and the person in front of me with let me ahead of them as I have so few items.  This happened one time and the lady only had five or six items of her own.

I bet she just wanted to stare at my ass.

Next time you are out, allow me to open the door for you, so I can slam it on your big head on the way out! Wait, can you even fit through doors with that big head of yours?  Grin

I'm sure that's the root of the issue.

I kind of see it as a fairness issue.  I don't mind waiting in line as long as everyone takes their turn.  It's when someone jumps ahead that I get angry.  It's unfair to me and the people behind me.  This is true for me in driving as well. I get just as irritated when a car in front of me lets four cars out in front of him with no concern for the ones behind him.  I'm all for taking turns in that situation.

When I first moved to Florida, I can remember older people at the grocery stores would all ask if they could cut in front because someone was outside waiting for them. At first being the nice, naive nurse that I am out of respect for my elders I would say sure. Well, after a year or so of hearing the same ol' same ol', I started saying no and have ever since. Wait your turn new line or not... it really isn't that difficult.

I'll tell you what irritates me.. everytime I go to buy stamps at the service desk, there is always someone sending thousands of dollars thru
western union... all that **** is so time consuming..that should be out lawed in grocery stores. If you have to send $ home, then you probly aren't here legally...

I can clear-out ANY checkout line in moments, and with complete efficiency...  Wink

Here's another one tht happened just the day before I left.
Convenience store, it was devoid of other customers at first, the clerk was away from the counter tending to non cashiering duties. I came to the counter with my purchase. Before the clerk gets there, a woman rushes in and stands next to me staring over the counter searching for a particular brand of cigarrettes. The clerk comes and she says " you got any...................." ( I forget the brand) He says yeah, gets them for her and makes small talk with her " you work today" " yeah, and I'm late too" He rings her up, off she goes but not until I tell her " never mind about what I might be up to, as long as you are late and need cigs".
