The above narrative was given by First Deputy Commissioner William Feehan prior to 9/11. He was one of the 343 firefighters lost at the World Trade Center.

Capt Terrence Hatton, on Oct 5, 2001, was remembered at a funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral as a hero and a role model. His wife, Beth Petrone-Hatton, did not discover she was pregnant until after Hatton died in the rescue effort at the World Trade Center. At Hatton's funeral, a letter from President Bush praised his service. The 6 foot - 4 firefighter, the son of a retired New York captain, was eulogized by the Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Hatton earned 19 citations for bravery in his 21 years on the job as a firefighter.

Beth Petrone-Hatton was secretary for Mayor Giuliani. Mayor Giulani introduced Beth to "Terry" a few years earlier.

A hero remembered...

I worked right outside of DC and i remember hearing the sound of the crash, but didn't know what happened until I got in to work.  What sticks in my mind is how blue the sky was that day.  God bless those that were killed and their families.

Personally, I’ll never forget that day or what I was doing. Oddly enough, I was getting ready to go grocery shopping when my phone rang and in a terrified voice, my mother on the other end saying don’t go anywhere, stay home! Why, I questioned? She said turn on your television, the world trade center was just hit by a plane lead by terrorists and there are more planes out there headed towards more buildings in DC, one of the planes she said, just flew over Johnstown Airport! I remember saying OMG, and turning the TV on and sitting there watching, in slow motion it seemed, the horrific coverage of the plane hitting the world trade center! I sat there the rest of the afternoon watching the coverage with disbelief that this was occurring.  It was hard to swallow. I remember having a sick feeling of sorrow in my gut that day and months afterwards. Yes, I shall never forget that day 9-11 as I am sure the rest of the world will not either. I always take the time, each anniversary, to pray for the victims and families. I always say  a prayer for all the heroes who sacrificed their lives to save others. May God Bless Them All!

Down with the enemies of Freedom and Liberty.

Anger at the audacity of someone to come on our soil and pick a fight.  Don't they realize who they were tangling with?

Sorrow at the loss of life, yes the sky was a most brillant blue that day in Sept.  Crisp fall air, beautiful. Except for the knowing, lives lost, children never to see a parent again, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters all in mourning at the loss of loved ones and strangers.

Confusion as to why anyone would do this, we helped nations and peoples all around the world.  We stand up for the little guy when no one else will.   Why smite at us?

Proud to live in a nation that where all mourned the loss we had that day, the loss of lives, of our security, of our innocents in the ways of the terrorist.  Proud to live in a nation that picked herself up off the ground dusted off her pants and set her face to the wind with the grit and determination of John Wayne himself.

We are lucky to live in the United States of America - and this privilege didn't come cheap. Our Founding Fathers were not cowards. They made immense sacrifices to establish this Great Nation in freedom - not the least of which was going to war with the enemy of that freedom. All of those who have fought in the subsequent wars and conflicts and those who are fighting today have continued to make sacrifices in order to defend those original ideals. Even now, our civil servants, particularly Firefighters and Police, are making sacrifices to maintain the quality of our lives in this freedom.

On Friday, September 11th, 2009, an American flag should be

Volunteers and Sept. 11 victims' relatives will read the names of the lost together at this year's commemoration, and the families will again be able to pay respects at ground zero even though the site is under construction.

I will never forget that day either.Fort Detrick is just down the road from us,I remember thinking.omg what if they attack there?
Camp David is 8 miles away...fighter jets flying overhead every 20 minutes ,for the longest time after 9-11.
my friend is an FBI agent.. he was at the pentagon after the plane crashed..for days he helped to clean up the wreckage and pull bodies out.
how terrible.

9-11was a day when he U.S. learned that we are not imune from attack.

Sadly, some still deny that.

Some are tying the hands of the ones that have kept us safe the last 8 years.   Shaky ground is what we tread I'm afraid.

Laura,

You were tragically taken away from us much too soon. You had so much to offer in this life. So much for you to do. We all never had the chance to say how much we love you or to say a special goodbye. Who knew the night before when we said goodbye it would be forever ...

You enriched our lives with your laughter, your smile, your sense of humor, your caring and understanding ways. We never imagined life without you here; nothing else matters -- you were everything to us.

You were filled with so many hopes and dreams. We know you have achieved most of your goals in the short time that you were here. You have succeeded in whatever you put in your mind to do. There was so much more for you to do: We will never see you get married. You were truly so beautiful. You were supposed to be here to go on, to watch your nephew John Gerard grow up. He will always know of you as a hero and a great inspiration to him. Or to tell stories and laugh with Albert. Or share many hours of conversations about anything with Maria, and to share more family time, like our family trips to Italy. Mom is so thankful for the precious time the two of you had together on your last trip -- that meant so much to her. She talks about that trip so often. Dad is so heartbroken as we all are without you here. John loved you as a sister, not a sister-in-law.

We treasure our memories of you, which are very dear to us. We cherished each moment with you. Oh what we would give to just hear your voice or your laugh, to see your smile and your beautiful eyes light up. The memories we shared together will be in our hearts forever.

We love you so much -- You are our beautiful "Angel" always. Love Always, Mom, Dad, Maria and Albert, John and John Gerard.
