I wasn't going to complain but since it happend to me twice in 2 different locations, so thought I would warn you all.
I was at Walmart in Altoona about 3 weeks ago and found a cute outfit on the clearance rack for 2 bucks for my daughter. I took the outfit to the register and watched as the clerk rang it up as I always do, mind you it was the only item I had that day.

She rang it through and said 2.12. I said, Oh yeah? Since when does clothes have tax on it? I said, how long have you lived in PA. Clothing does not have tax! She said well that is what it rang, and I said, I don't care what it rang, clothing is not taxable. So she played around and played around and was really frustrated after about 10 minutes, with a long line behind me, she said, do you just want to pay the tax? I said hell no, I pay enough taxes, I'm not just going to pay the tax! She said well you have to go over to customer service. I looked over at customer service and there was a line there, and I said, so I have to wait in line again over there for them to fix this problem you can't handle? I said call customer service over here to fix it, and she looked at her line and said sorry, you must go over there!

I said OK, then you grab the outfit and walk me over there and get me help right away then, because I'm not waiting in line again for another 20 minutes! So she said I can't I have a line. So I said well fix it here then, and she said I tried and I can't they have to do it in customer service. So by that time the line at customer service was gone so I took the outfit over and the lady there had the same problem with the price and had to call a manager to see what to do! They did a override and that was that. The other day I was at Walmart in Johnstown and the the same thing happend on a piece of clothing, the same price as well. This time, I complained to the manager at customer service and told her the same thing happened to me in Altoona, and that Walmart needs to stop trying to tax people on clothing or I will report them!
I said to her how many people do you think you taxed on clothes and they missed it and paid it? She apologized and said they will look into the matter!
So be aware at Walmart people, they make enough money without improperly taxing items that should not be taxed.

Oh, and by the way folks, it wasn't about the 12 cents, it was about improper taxing, and I think we all pay enough taxes as it is!

http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/061/chapter53/s53.1.html

possibly they were considering it formal apparel:

(2)  The sale or use of accessories, ornamental wear, formal day or evening apparel, fur articles and sporting goods and sporting clothing shall be subject to tax unless the purchaser is entitled to claim an exemption under the law.

Was it a fur coat?

No tax on clothes in PA?!
Try 9.25% out here! Not only is there a state sales tax, but most localities also have it in addition to the state.
Still, you would think Walmart would have all the proper taxing in the sku system and not leave it up to the cashier.

I really do not care for them either but I love to go there and get deals like that, especially since at the age my daughter is at, they grow it seems everyday. I don't like to go to the high end clothes stores and pay 20 or 25 bucks for a little outfit that she will grow out of in a month. I will go to the high end stores to buy her a special dress for a special occasions however, but for everyday clothes, I refuse to pay that kind of money. I would rather put that money in her account.  I guess you can say I go to  walmart to cherry pick.

That is one nice thing about PA. No tax on clothes. That may change one day, because yes other states do tax clothes, but not here, not yet. Someone at walmart is not doing something right when they clearance the clothes because the tags on them, when scanned, are adding tax to it.

Computers do what humans tell them to do.  A human made a mistake, or an omission when entering the clearance item would be my guess.  Probably not the store trying to illegally charge you tax or the register operator making an error.  Just a data entry error that they have a problem overriding, maybe for reasons of security against cashiers giving price breaks to friends and relatives.

Oh how I 'd love to see family owned business's open again in our town's and boroughs across the country. A coffee shop opened in Portage a few weeks ago. They serve hand dipped ice cream also. It was nice seeing folks walking the streets during the early evening enjoying their treats.
