i think a "partial"default is gonna happen. If we default, we'll have to make good on all the domestic pension funds tied up in debt bonds, but i think foreign investors in debt bonds will be left holding the bag.
Defense funding is about 800 billion annually. If we could get out of these wars and bring all our "police troops" home, we could cut about 500 billion a year from the defense budget. Ten years and you shave 5 trillion from the deficit. Partial default on foreign bondholders could save about 2 trillion more. 20 years and we could be back in balance. Then we could talk about repaying foreign bondholders. Namely Russia,Japan and China. Gold and silver would maybe skyrocket, so China would actually benefit from a US default in a wierd sort of way.

You forgot about the 64 billion we give a year to the IMF and all the other monies we give to foriegn nations to by the trust and it doesn't work that would add up to another trillion or so.

I take comfort in the fact that my doctor says I'm not gonna be around much longer. Doc was gonna take a leg because my A1C was 10.5, but I'm on an experimental drug, so at least i can die with my legs.
I hope my heart hangs on until after 2012 because i want to see what all goes down with all the doomsday talk. A hurricane or earthquake is all its gonna take to get the hysteria stirred up.

I don't think the world is going to be a very good place to be in about 5 years, so I'm cool with dying.
