Sometimes, Johnstown seems like another country or planet to me. So much poverty and dispair. I live in the Dakotas now. Unemployment isn't a problem here at all. Most people work two or three jobs. Not because wages are low - they are especially high because the demand for workers is so competitive. North Dakota companies advertize in south Dakota all the time. There are hundreds of job listings everyday, and few people even apply. The average wage i see is about 11.00 an hour. Rent for a one bedroom is about 400.00. cost of living isn't noticably different from J-town. They are building a new wal mart in Rapid City now - the first one is the no.1 store in the country in RC. They just built a new downtown plaza thats awesome. The highest building in RC is about 15 stories, but every building is occupied. The political climate is vastly different from Pa. There is so much economic activity here. It dwarfs wyoming , montana, and colorado. Every business seems to be thriving. I wish johnstown could learn from places like Rapid City.
Rapid City has about 65,000 residents, the hustle and bustle reminds me of Johnstown when I was growing up in the early 60's and downtown was always packed. I think the political and business climate has a lot to do with success. Johnstown politicans seem to corrupt everybody and everything.
I just rented a place on woodbine place in RC. It's right by canyon lake and canyon lake park. The quality of life is high, just becausde of the prescence of the park. Maybe johnstowns biggest problem is the lack of planning and layout in the old days. I wish the city fathers would have planned it better, and taken quality of life into consideration. But then, when i was a kid, the river was orange, and the air tasted like sulphur, and smelled like rotten eggs.

sitting on the garage roof picking cherries off the tree and eating them, spitting the pits at the unsuspecting masses as they walk by in their perpetual state of denial.

When we get around to carving the likenesses of FDR, Jimmy Carter, Obama and John Murtha onto the side of Prospect Hill they will come

http://www.bls.gov/cps/

Or maybe - just maybe - the biggest problem right now is the unemployment rate.

http://www.bls.gov/ro3/palaus.htm
Nationally 9.1%
Cambria County 9.3%
Not much of a difference at this particular time.
