Texas judge responds to being caught beating his daughter on video

I was sorry that I watched the video, but even more disgusting is the number of comments on the Youtube page that actually advocate this kind of treatment. If you grabbed someone off the street and did this to them, you'd be arrested, but people think it's ok to do this to a minor child? This guy is out of control.

I guess it should be no surprise that the child abuse rate in the US is the highest in the first world. Never mind that abused children are 74 times more likely to commit crimes against others and six times more likely to maltreat their own children. The fact that there are people out there who think this is ok really makes me question just what kind of core values and morals this country really has.

I have read some online(comments in chat rooms) where people claimed they were hit as bad or worse than what is in the vid when they were kids.  Some saying it was no big deal or like you said defending it.

Not standing by the judge, nor condemning him, but, abuse as I was trained, is physical punishment which results in bruises or other marks visible 24 hours later.

I do not think this would qualify under that definition.

It is interesting to me that the Mom was also involved and rather than stopping the punishment she actually administered some of the same.

The instant you feel you need to hit your child you have failed as a parent. Im glad this judge doesn't get to make our laws. This kind of treatment is what goes on in countries we say need change. I wish she would have made this public sooner so he could have been charged.

I agree with beefman. Violence is a sign of failure. I'm not the perfect parent, and I've made my share of mistakes, but I am going to stand in judgement of this man and say what he did was wrong. Pure and simple. Good parenting takes a great deal of skill, ingenuity, and patience. The minute you pick up a belt and beat your child for seven minutes is a signal that you have lost all control of the situation. It's a massive failure.

Here's what a good parent looks like. With a couple modifications, I aspire to be this woman in the future.

I have had the misfortune to have had a child who did not respond to anything. Not all problems in a family are the fault of or can be controlled by the parent. Those who have been lucky to have never had a major problem are quick to judge. Yes, spanking should be a last resort, and beating is never okay. But, in this case if you are going to judge the judge then you must also judge the mother.

Perhaps we should all have a child like one I know of who stood in her doorway for two hours screaming. And I mean in the doorway (hand and feet on the door jamb not on the floor). Maybe we could be more tolerant of the plight of others.

Again, in this case I do not know the family history. I will not judge without that information.

I got worse than that when I was a kid and I don't resort to violence and have never started a physical fight with anyone in my life.  Try getting beat until you cry and then beat until you shut up, or maybe just beat until your parent feels better.  Seriously, this kid should feel lucky they (both parents) didn't completely wig on her.

I am betting his wife would never have behaved in such a manner or they wouldn't be married any longer.  Violence is not a sign of failure it is a sign of you have reached your limit and you better be grown enough to know what to do to manage your limitations when reached.  The child in this video did not get beat for 7 minutes if she had she might have actually cried for a lot longer than she did.  As soon as the parents left the room the first time her sobbing stopped almost as if on cue which is a good sign that the planned lesson didn't attached to well to the memory banks of the child.  Each and every child is different and you have to match that difference in the ways you discipline them.  You don't know the history of this child or what they family has been through.  She may have gotten 10 breaks for the same thing before the parent snapped.  To judge them is to fail at God's mission for you and that is to love everyone, even when you don't agree with what they do, say, or raise their child.

Well, the video certainly did not show a teenager that was agreeing with what the parents were saying.

I am not condemning what this guy did simply because he's beating his child with a belt. I don't agree with hitting children, but here in the US it's still legal even if treating another adult the same way is not.

This man is not simply engaged in discipline. He's yelling, swearing, and threatening along with it. That's not discipline. The fact that she's not crying means nothing. Children who are mistreated regularly learn not to cry. The lack of crying could mean anything, but the fact that she's begging him to stop and he keeps going and going is pretty telling.

But, if you think that there are not children who can cause a parent to lose it, I think you are being uncharacteristically naive.
