This came as a complete surprise to me.  I really thought the Marlins or Cards would sign the slugger.

You bet, shame he won't retire wearing the Birds on a Bat uniform.  However, with the 10 year contract (if he plays 10 years) it's not a bad fit playing in the American League with the DH designation.  Ten year contract puts him in his 40s and a DH hitter.
