Did anyone utilize this program and get a new car over the last week.  Or do you know someone who did.  My car is one year to old to qualifiy.  DAMMIT!

If the program is still available next weekend, I want to take my 1996 jeep to see what I can get.  Plans are to keep the '99 Jeep need it for lake and other trips.  A new car would be nice, but I honestly hate making payments again.

It's good through Tuesday, but unless the Senate approves more funding this week, the program will end.

We thought about trading the truck in, but I really don't want a car payment again right now either.

All I see is a lot of potentially decent used cars going to the shredder and a chitload of new car payments for people who hopefully can afford them.  At least the automakers stand to benefit from this program.

It does seem a little odd that our financial problems are attributed, at least partially, to a debtors society then we create a program that creates more debt...

Think they estimated 250,000 cars for the 1st billion allocated for the program.  You are right that is a lot of cars some of which were decent yesterday and trashed today.  Not necessarily a green thing to do either, all the energy and resources that go into a new car could be worse than riding an old car at a lower mpg.  I also wonder if all the cars bought during this program will make sales stale over the course of the next few years when people would normally trade in these clunkers anyhow.

Yes Yoyo, I agree with what you have said, and Beeker both make great points.
I do think they were looking at moving inventory so the car companies could get back to building cars.  Create a demand for cars, maybe get some people back to work.  It could all back fire on them we just don't know.

I also read where the truck emission's are cutting back on the horse power and load capacity of the new trucks and may create a Cuban syndrome where the owners of older model trucks will just keep fixing and replacing engines to get around buying a new truck. The contractors that they talked to pretty much said they were not interested in any of the new trucks and would continue with their old trucks.
