I was just musing about the events in our lives that shape and define us.
I was wondering if I could put my finger on the five most influential on shaping my being.
The events could be positive or negative.

I guess my biggest was a huge negative-- my parents died when I was 15 years old.
Next though would be when I got guardianship of my brother & sister at 18.
My first sexual experience would be in the top 5.
Graduation from College would be one.
Having my mother teach me classical music & piano also stands out.  Especially upon reflection after # 1 happened, it really left me with feeling like her presence is always with me whenever I play.
In that vein I guess I'll have to go to 6, and include the experiences of spending time with my father like watching football and old sci fi movies with him when.

Guess some of these are kinda fluid instead of being specific  individual events.

1)  Having the good fortune to be born into the family I am a part of and in the time and place where I am located.
2)  Meeting my future wife in homeroom in high school, and actually being noticed by her!
3)  The birth of my first son.
4)  The birth of my daughter.
5)  The birth of my second son.

and I'll add a number 6 - the birth of my grandchildren.

You don't specify whether these were good or bad

Interesting topic!  I had to think about this one and narrow some things down to conform to the limit of FIVE.

1.  BAD-My first experience of death, my great-aunt Dorrie's funeral.  I had to realize that she wasn't coming back.  1983

2.  Huh-My first orgasm.  It scared the living shiite outta' me because I thought it was broke.  1984

3.  GOOD-My first alcohol buzz!  GAWD was my mom PISSED!  My uncle's 4th of July picnic's were and are still GREAT!  1985

4.  GOOD-I kicked my phat worthless cheating first wife out!  I then invited ALL my friends over for a fish fry and beer!  2003

5.  GOOD-Sky entered my life (for the second time).  She was far more persistent this time and would NOT take NO for an answer.  The rest is history...  fall 2003

1.  College graduation.  While this would appear to be good I wasn't ready for what came next and as a result had several disappointing years.

2.  Getting fired.  You should never be overheard saying you work for idiots even if you do work for idiots.  This, though, was great!  It happened on May 31.  I collected all but two days of my available unemployment before starting my next job.  Had I not been fired I may still be working that miserable job today.

3.  Dad being diagnosed with cancer.  This was horrible.  He was too young and we weren't ready to lose him.  Nearly 12 years later he's doing just fine.

4,  "I'm late"  Not the words you want to hear from your girlfriend.  Even at 36.  Certainly a life altering moment, one I really never wanted to experience.  It's taken a long time and someday I'll be accepting of the fact that I am a dad.

5.  Landing the current job.  Few opportunities exist and even better it's a great gig.  Fifteen applied, nine were interviewed, one was chosen.  I could do what I do for another 30 years.

Lost two children, that's awful. I'm sorry.
Those had to be defining moments for sure.

I'm seeing a theme here with your, it seems you negatives become positives-- and I bet becoming a dad will too.  This will be your first?
