I almost always do. Say when you're just walking by someone in a parking lot or any other encounter?
The reactions always interest me so.
Some ignore me.  Sad
Some very uncomfortably and sheepishly mutter Hi, and get away from me as quickly as they possibly can.
Some have an inquisitive look as in " do I know her?"
Some come right out and ask in various ways " do I know you"?
Some strike up conversations.

I always smile and say hello, sometimes I even ask how are you today! The reactions are all different, but hardly ever is my smile not returned. Smiles are contagious!

I usually always say hello and how are you when I pass by anyone. Unless of course I'm outside and it's pouring down rain like it is today, then I usually just pass by without saying anything.

but a day like that might be just when a stranger ( or you) needs a boost the most!

Why don't we try to respect one another.

I usually greet people and the majority return the greeting.

I find it more common here than in the East.

I just say hi and the other person will just say hi back... and we keep going.  I have never gotten those reactions you listed.  Are you saying hi & just standing there staring at the person? Wink Cheesy

I used to say hello or hi until I moved down South.. unless you say HEY! people do ignore you. To me, HEY always sounds so disrespectful, even if I don't know you.  I have come to realize that no matter where you are in life, you just do as the native do.. so hey ya'll! Wink
