Did anyone else see it? It's amazing he came out alive let alone without a scratch and the car took impact from all sides! Then you have the type of crash that took Dale Earnhardt's life looked nothing more than the run of the mill fender bender with the wall.

But....Dale Earnhardt was not wearing a HANS Device. The outcome might have been different. Newman is very fortunate he did not have a fire...with extrication taking some time, as to be expected. I did notice a hose line was in place as a precaution. Extrication in a race car would be somewhat different than in a normal passenger vehicle.

True, plus Earnhardt's accident most of the force was taken in one spot, whereas although Newman's accident looked more horrific, the car flipping and landing and twisting and such the force of absorbed over practically the entire vehicle. I still can't believe though not just the HANS device that saved him from head and neck injury, but how the driver's roll bar system and how the car is made saved Newman from having any type of crush injuries to other parts of his body. Either right before or after he landed on Harvick's hood you could see fire underneath Newman's car, but fortunately it didn't spread and extinguished itself.

I'm sure the extrication would be different between a race car and a normal passenger vehicle, but it amazes me how they do it whether dealing with a race car or a normal passenger vehicle.

With new safety regulations in place, HANS device mandate, restrictor plate regulation, Nascar is trying to prevent another accident like the one that killed Earnhardt.  Newman is extremely fortunate that he was able to walk away from that accident. Imagine how he must feel today? They say that once you are involved in a MVA, the bumps and bruises often do not appear for 48 - 72 hours ... he has to hurt.

WDVE, you often speak in safety terms. Are you a safety manager?

I believe they should eliminate the restrictor-plate racing altogether. NASCAR believes it's implemented for safety reasons, but I tend to side with a lot of the drivers who believe it's not exactly safe having the cars run that close together on tracks such as Daytona and Talladega going the speeds they are going. It's also been said that restrictor-plate racing is more exciting for the fans. I don't know, I don't find Daytona and Talladega any more exciting than I find any other race.

I'm sure Ryan's hurting today, but he is still very lucky not to have had any major injuries.
